When TAG Heuer announced their collaboration with Hodinkee on the Carrera Chronograph Seafarer (Ref. CBS2014.FT6293), I was immediately interested. I've long admired the original Heuer Seafarer, particularly the Abercrombie & Fitch Seafarer ref. 2446C, but finding one in good condition these days is nearly impossible. This new Carrera Seafarer was a chance to get a vintage-inspired design from the brand that made the original. I knew I wanted it.
Opening the box confirmed I'd made the right choice. This watch captures the feel of vintage Heuer chronographs, updated with modern touches and a useful complication.
Case & Wearability
The Carrera Seafarer comes in a 42mm stainless steel case, and while I'd personally have preferred something slightly larger, perhaps 44mm, I understand TAG Heuer's decision to keep it at 42mm. The proportions are well balanced, allowing it to wear comfortably on a variety of wrist sizes.
The fully polished case, with Carrera's angular lugs, looks both dressy and sporty. Despite being a chronograph with a unique complication, the watch maintains a manageable thickness, fitting well under cuffs for daily wear. It's not overly hefty, making it versatile enough to wear both casually and semi-formally.
TAG Heuer and Hodinkee paired this watch exclusively with a black rubber strap. I initially wondered if this was limiting, but it turned out to be one of my favorite features. The strap is comfortable, durable, and paired with a clasp featuring micro-adjustments that make achieving a perfect fit easy. It works better than I expected.
Dial & Aesthetics

The dial is where this Carrera Seafarer stands out. Inspired by the historic Heuer Seafarers of the 1960s, the dial is well executed, mixing vintage character with modern readability.
The standout feature is the tides complication at 9 o'clock, indicating high tide, low tide, and whether the tide is rising or falling. Every time I wear the watch, this complication draws curiosity and questions. While moon phases measure monthly cycles universally, this tide complication is local and daily, reflecting the lunar day of approximately 24 hours and 50 minutes, the time between successive high tides at a specific coastal location. It's useful if you're near the ocean frequently.
The dial features a balanced layout with two additional chronograph sub-dials and a subtle date window at 6 o'clock. The colors, deep blue with soft white accents and hints of green, fit the maritime theme. The raised hour markers and cleanly printed scales are well done. Legibility is good even at a glance.

Movement & Performance
Inside the Carrera Seafarer is TAG Heuer's TH20-13 automatic movement. It's reliable and accurate, powering the watch smoothly through daily wear. The chronograph action feels precise, with responsive pushers and a clean reset. The tide complication, designed to follow lunar-day timing, functions consistently.
TAG Heuer opted for practicality here. While it's not the most decorated movement you'll find, its reliability and serviceability add peace of mind. It's a daily wear watch, built to perform without fuss.

Final Thoughts
The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer × Hodinkee brings back Heuer's maritime chronograph heritage with modern execution. Its tides complication makes it interesting and useful, particularly for those who spend time near the water.
Though I initially wished for a slightly larger size, the 42mm case proves to be the right choice, comfortable and balanced. The dial looks good, and the rubber strap with its micro-adjust clasp works well. People ask about it when I wear it.
It's a solid addition to a collection, especially for those who like Heuer's history and specialized complications.
