The Yacht-Master 42 (Ref. 226659) in white gold is a watch I did not expect to like. I am not usually a big Rolex fan and the only other Rolex I've had is the Explorer. However, the Submariner's design always appealed to me, but here we have something different: the irreverence of white gold on a rubber strap, in a 42 mm case that sits close to my ideal 43 mm. Add the all-day comfort of the Oysterflex strap, and it became a watch I took a long time to think about.
The Yacht-Master line launched in the 1990s as Rolex's nautical-inspired alternative to the Submariner. It retained the robustness but leaned toward luxury and lifestyle. The 42 mm reference 226659, introduced in 2019, was the first Yacht-Master in this larger size, crafted entirely in 18k white gold and paired with the Oysterflex rubber strap.
Design and case
At 42 mm, the white gold case works well for me. The black ceramic bezel is matte with raised, polished black numerals. Unlike the Submariner, this bezel is bidirectional and quiet, meant more for calculating sailing intervals than diving. I really wish it clicked. The crown guards and lines are familiar Rolex shapes, but the black-on-black combination gives it a stealthier, more modern vibe.

Dial and hands
The black dial is classic Rolex: Chromalight lume, Mercedes hands, and date at 3 o'clock under the cyclops. And here is the rub: I have never liked the cyclops. It works only when viewed dead-on, and I wish Rolex would just enlarge the date window. It is one of the few design quirks that continues to divide opinions.

Movement
Inside is the Caliber 3235, Rolex's latest generation with a Chronergy escapement, 70-hour power reserve, and -2/+2 sec per day precision. It is a solid movement, robust and accurate, with technical improvements over the old 3135. For a deeper dive into the mechanics, this watchmaker's comparison of the 3135 vs 3235 is worth reading.
On the wrist
This watch is about presence and comfort. The 42 mm white gold case has heft, but the Oysterflex strap balances it well. The strap integrates into the case with spring-loaded inserts and an Oysterlock clasp with micro-adjustments. It is one of the few Rolex bracelets/clasps that feels both sturdy and genuinely comfortable. I could wear this all day without a thought.
Market and collectability
MSRP is 35,000 USD. On the secondary market, it trades for around the same or slightly below MSRP, which is unusual for Rolex sports models. Many steel Submariners and Daytonas command premiums, but this white gold Yacht-Master tends to hover close to retail, making it one of the few precious metal Rolex sports watches you can actually buy at or near list price without waiting for a year.
Titanium comparison
I also looked at the Yacht-Master 42 RLX titanium, Reference 226627. I like the industrial look of titanium watches, and Rolex's take is a good one: lightweight, rugged, and understated. But in the perfect Rolex way, they never give you everything. Of course, the titanium Yacht-Master does not come with an Oysterflex strap. If Rolex had paired that lightweight case with the comfort of Oysterflex, it would have been hard to pass up. Instead, they make you choose: the elegance of white gold on rubber or the practicality of titanium on bracelet.
The Verdict
I did not expect to enjoy this watch, but I do. The irreverence of precious metal on a rubber strap works here. The Oysterflex and clasp are excellent, the black-on-black aesthetic is stealthy, and the size is just right. The cyclops remains a nuisance, but that is part of the Rolex DNA I will never love. And the titanium version? It proves Rolex knows exactly how to give you almost everything you want.
The Yacht-Master 42 ref. 226659 manages to be both dressy and casual at once. For me, it is the most interesting Rolex sports watch currently on offer.
