I finally tracked down the Panerai California 8 Days Luminor DLC (Ref. PAM00779) in May 2025 after hunting for a good deal. Unlike the more common 47 mm California dial Panerai, this 44 mm Luminor California is a rarer limited edition of 2,000 pieces, released in 2018. I have always loved the California dial's history, and this model stood out as a clean, complication-free Panerai. It is refreshingly simple compared to most of my collection.
Brand history
Panerai's California dial traces back to the 1930s and 1940s, when the mix of Roman and Arabic numerals was used on early military dive watches supplied to the Italian Navy. Over the decades, Panerai revived the design sporadically, and today it remains one of the brand's most recognizable signatures. The PAM00779 continues that tradition, wrapped in the familiar Luminor case with crown guard and a modern in-house movement.
Case and wearability
At 44 mm, the DLC-coated titanium case should sound intimidating, but on my 7.5 inch wrist it wears comfortably and feels surprisingly light. The DLC is not jet black. It has a warm, aged-bronze tone that sets it apart from standard coatings. No scratches or dings yet, and DLC has proven far tougher than traditional PVD. The case is bold and unapologetically toolish, and it does not slide under a cuff easily, but this was never meant to be a dress piece.
Dial and aesthetics
The California dial is all about balance and history: Roman numerals up top, Arabic below, and no text clutter. What elevates it here are the polished blued baton hands paired with beige faux-aged lume. In sunlight the hands catch the light beautifully, while the lume (true to Panerai form) charges quickly and glows for hours. It is as legible as it is distinctive.
Movement and performance
Inside is the hand-wound P.5000 caliber, delivering an impressive 8-day reserve. In practice, it lives up to the spec. I am still surprised when I pick it up days later and it is keeping time. Winding is smooth, with no complications to complicate matters: one click to set, push back in, and wind away. Accuracy has been excellent, and while I have not taken it near its rated 300 m, it performed flawlessly in the pool without concern.

The strap
The PAM00779 ships with a Bund-style cuff and a black rubber strap. I removed the Bund immediately, not my style and far too bulky. I have experimented with a Delugs strap, but nothing beats the OEM rubber for comfort and practicality. Panerai's thick leather straps with tang buckles remain a pain to swap or wear, and I wish they offered more deployant clasp options. Strap culture is part of Panerai ownership, but here I have settled happily on the rubber strap.
Final thoughts
This watch is a keeper. It is not an all-occasion piece, but it works year-round as something rare and different. Even among Paneristi, it is a model you are unlikely to spot in the wild. If you love the California dial and want a Luminor case instead of the Radiomir, this is the one to chase. The Radiomir California PAM01349 is the closest comparison, but its dégradé green dial did not appeal to me. The PAM00779 gets it right: simple, distinctive, and not trying too hard.
